1997 ANNUAL REPORT

This past year was a very busy and highly successful one for our children’s charity. The organization has seen a great deal of growth in the number of new companies, volunteers, staff and board members that joined our efforts. The charity also experienced a 102% financial growth factor as well. Just like the past three years, this year ended on a positive note, with the continued support and partnership of Fine Host Corporation and the generosity of many local business owners, mangers and caring individuals.

This year the organization received more outside financial contributions and again, received more support through the sale of bottled water at Sun Devil Stadium. Increased participation was seen at the 3rd Annual Christmas Party with Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and the Single Parents Association. From the growth that the organization encountered this past year, 1998 looks a lot brighter for EKC and our community’s youth.

Program Activity:

1997 Youth Outreach Programs AIFL: This program was sponsored in part by a number of corporate and small business sponsors. This program provided over 2000 tickets that were dispersed throughout 30 schools in Peoria, Chandler, north and west Phoenix. The AIFL consisted of eight teams, which played four games every Saturday at Maryvale High School. This portion of our program raised nearly $3,100 in which all the funds were used to support the efforts of the Maryvale Coalition’s Substances Abuse Prevention and Training Program.

MHS Athlete Mentoring Program: Over the past three years, EKC has placed professional athletes in schools for one-time visits. For the first time in our charity history, Calvin Schexnayder became the first professional athlete to work a part-time program at Maryvale High School. Funded through a Title V Government Grant, Calvin served the students of Maryvale High by conducting lunchtime intramural and self-esteem-building programs. This program helped the school administrators alleviate the problems that were causing difficulties during the lunch periods. Cost of the program was $2,500.

3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament: Kokopelli Golf Resort was the site of this year’s 3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament. The event was held on September 21 and raised approximately $3,700 in revenues. It was a fun event that made the Channel 3 News, thanks to sportscaster Mike Chamberlin.

2nd Annual Flag Football Benefit Game: This game involved a good number of members from the World Champion Arizona Rattlers competing in a celebrity flag football game with the Phoenix Police Department. This year’s game played benefit to the T.A.P.S program in which we, along with officers from all the departments, raised $3000.00. A large multi-prize raffle was conducted at half-time.

Single Parent Association Christmas Party: For the second year in a row, brothers of ASU’s Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity along with the sisters of Alpha Phi Sorority played host to 50 boys, girls and their parent for our December 10th Annual Christmas Party. This party consisted of dinner, games and a special visit from Santa Claus. Each member from the fraternity and sorority contributed a special gift for each child and spent the entire evening with that child to help ensure a special evening. This event was a major success and we are looking forward to continuing it as an annual event. (Rumor has it the adults had as much fun as the children.) Program Cost: $3,450

1997 Arizona State Fair: Through the dedicated efforts of Every Kid Counts own Michael Long, Special Events Director, EKC made history by setting up an information and products booth at the 1997 Arizona State Fair. During this sixteen-day event we raised nearly $2,200 and passed out well over 2,500 pieces of EKC literature. Michael did an outstanding job for the charity.

Program Funding:

Combined Program Costs: $8,950

Total Contributions: $8,950

EKC Water Club Program: In the beginning of 1997, EKC kicked off its EKC Water Club Program. The program would register individuals and businesses that then for every $10.00 donation they made to EKC, they would receive a case of water. Throughout the year, with the help of Shelly King, EKC Secretary from DenAmerica, we delivered 550 cases of water, which generated an income for the charity of $1,100.

Grants Program:

Maryvale Coalition $3,100

Youth Football Grant for team sponsorship: 500

Maryvale High School’s DECA Marketing Organization: 500

Maryvale High School’s ROTC Organization: 750

Total Expenses: $4,850

These grants provided assistance in the area of education, athletic and substance abuse awareness programming. With funding of public education on the down swing, EKC is working to do its part in providing alternative funding to ensure the development of our youth’s mental and social environment.

Products and Equipment Donations:

Every Kid County Water: 5,000 bottles to various programs $1,665

Field Refurbishing Program: Agua Fria High School Baseball Field 550

Total Contributions: $2,215

Administrative and office expenses:

Because of low budgeting and funding, EKC has yet to hire a full staff to support the charity’s day-to-day operations. Therefore, the organization has yet to pay any full-time salaries. However, the following is the breakdown of the cost of running the charity office:

Office Rent (EKC’s portion is $200 per month): $2,400

Phone $1,500

Field Phone $1,200

Office Supplies $ 575

Printing Costs $1,850

Travel and mileage reimbursement expenses $ 760

Total Expenses: $8,285

Total Revenues $22,415

Total Expenses $24,300

Surplus/Loss ($1,885)

1997 CONTRIBUTORS

In 1997 EKC was honored to have many supporters of our charity programs. One of our main goals was to provide the most recognition possible for those who have chosen to be partners in our programs. The following are the various businesses that sponsored the charity during our 1997 fiscal year:

Major Contributors:

Crown Press: For the third consecutive year, Crown Press has participated in all aspects of the charity’s operations with support and donations well over $7,000 in printing. Mark Gefroh, a partner in the firm, first joined the Board of Advisors in 1996 and has been re-elected to the Board of Directors. His enthusiasm has been a great contribution to the communication aspect of our programs. We appreciate his dedication and the support of his staff.

Sam’s Club: Patrice Parker has continued to be of great help and assistance in the development of our program as well as developing new relationships with other kid’s programs. We are greatly appreciative to Patrice, who was appointed to Board of Directors in the last quarter of our fiscal year. Sam’s Club at 48th Street and Washington have participated in all of our charity events.

Arizona Rattlers: The players and coaches were inspirational in their participation in our Golf Tournament, youth outreach and mentoring programs throughout the year. Participating in the charity program were Scherdrick Bonner, Calvin Schexnayder, Tracy Mau, Hunkie Cooper, Head Coach Danny White, Vice President of Operations Gene Nudo, as well as many other players. We truly appreciate their dedication to our community’s youth and our programs.

Fast Signs @ 32nd Street and Indian School Road: Donated at or below cost, our entire banner and sign needs. Ross Meager and his staff provided a great deal of support and for this EKC is proud to have them as a major partner.

Sedona Bottling Company: Again in 1997, the water label took on a whole new look for the ASU Sun Devil Stadium and Water Club Program. The label now has a more colorful look to it, as well as the logos of companies that donated money to help the charity’s programming. We are also in our second year working with our water manufacturer, Sedona Bottling Co. (Dan Delaney is the company’s President.) We greatly appreciate the support of Dan and Sedona Bottling Company.

Fine Host Corporation: The Every Kid Counts Water Program had a big year in sales at the stadium. Fine Host Corporation brought EKC water into Sun Devil Stadium for the second year in a row. Through this fund-raising event and contributions we raised nearly $3,100.00 to support youth in the valley. Brian Hartman, Regional Manager for Fine Host Corporation, joined the Board of Advisors and has participated in a number of programs throughout the year. We appreciate Brian’s and Fine Host Corporation’s dedication and support.

Ramirez Roofing Incorporated: President and owner Eddie Ramirez and wife Linda took a great interest in our charity program this past year. Ramirez Roofing provided $1,250 in corporate donations as well as $2,500 sponsorship for our 3rd Annual Christmas Party for Children of Single Parents, 3rd Annual Golf Tournament, 2nd Annual Flag Football Benefit Game, and joined Crown Press as the first ever Water Label Charity Partners. We greatly appreciate the dedication that both Eddie and Linda provide not only to our program, but to other youth organizations as well. They are definitely heroes in our community.

John F. Long Properties: Dedicated to the well being of the Maryvale area, Mr. Long and company purchased $1,500 worth of tickets to our 2nd Annual Flag Football Benefit Game. His company in turn donated the tickets to underprivileged youth in select elementary schools in the Maryvale area.

WB61 and Channel 3: This past year, WB61 and Channel 3 provided a great deal of public information broadcasting of our various events. They also sponsored the EKC Arizona Water Label. Thanks again for your support.
